Album Review
Bishop Snow - Mission Ave II
Artist: Bishop Snow Album: “Mission Ave II” Label: MadStrange Release Date: July 1, 2024 Location: Oceanside, California Written by Tony Le Calvez
“Mission Ave II” is Snow’s first release of 2024, a 34-minute album that cements the foundation of Snow’s sound. He uses his lyricism to paint an image of his larger community: rich in detail, lived-in, and abundant in culture. He doesn’t rap as merely an observer of his culture, but as someone deeply embedded in it and undeniably shaped by it. His talent and ability to develop texture across the record is due to how he himself is shaped by the texture of his community.
As early as his first album, “Lord, Forgive Me,” Snow’s sound has been undeniably West Coast, but the album’s creative direction and nod to influences were graspingly broad. His second album, “Bury Me A G,” improved on this by narrowing the amount of aesthetic influences he seemed to be pulling from. Retreating from contemporary trends in hip-hop, Snow’s following albums lean farther and farther into the production and lyrical elements that defined West Coast hip hop at its roots, with a sound that feels genuinely pulled right off of “The Chronic” and a vocal delivery reminiscent of Ice Cube.
“Mission Ave II” is hyper-focused on recreating the West Coast sound of the mid 1990s. The production is full of clap tracks, unobtrusive bass lines, and that gangsta worm that now feels like a trade-mark of that era; the best examples on this album are the songs “These Days” and “Party In The Hood.” While this approach might not be the most original or creative, it’s balanced by how flawlessly it’s executed. Snow’s lyrical flows, paired with the musical style and production, are signs of a deep admiration and researched understanding of West Coast hip hop at its peak.
